Cassily CharlesWriting groups can be casual drop-in meetings or intensive communities, and they have magical benefits for researchers, including doctoral candidates. Whether you want to increase your productivity without too much chit chat, get constructive feedback on your work, generate new collaborations or build a sense of community with other researchers, there is a kind of writing group for you.

This session will look at a range of types of groups and events for different purposes, and equip you with the basics to create and run (or simply join and benefit from) each different type of group. It covers logistics for running groups online, skills for effective feedback and facilitation, fostering healthy group culture, and practical examples drawn from years of facilitating writing groups online for researchers.

About the facilitator

Cassily has worked in universities for 20 years in Group-of-Eight, regional and international universities, in academic literacy, researcher development and English linguistics. In recent years she has supported thousands of research candidates, early career researchers, supervisors and other academic staff and students with counselling, teaching, writing groups, writing feedback and coaching. In addition to her degrees in linguistics and education, she is a qualified social worker. She never finished her own PhD, many years ago – and doesn’t regret it – but has travelled that journey with others many times since then.
